Strength,
side by side.Sports massage.
A hands-on way to see how your muscles hold against a gentle, steady push. We compare left and right, explain what we notice, and use it to shape your massage.

Gentle push. You hold. We notice.
A conversation
with your muscles.
Manual muscle testing is a long-standing way to estimate how strongly a muscle holds. We use it to understand how you are working today, then choose where to focus.
Push, hold, notice
You hold a position while we apply a steady, gentle push. We notice how your muscle responds, and you are never asked to give more than feels comfortable.
Side by side
We compare left and right, because the difference between your own sides is often more useful than any single number.
Plain-language notes
You hear what we noticed in everyday words, and how it shapes your session.
What it is
- A hands-on check of how muscles hold against a gentle push
- Left and right compared, in a comfortable position
- Findings shared in plain language
- Offered as a wellness service, often alongside massage
What it is not
- A medical diagnosis or a medical test
- A way to detect allergies, illnesses or nutrient needs
- An exact measurement of strength
- A replacement for medical care
From zero
to five.
Testers use a simple 0 to 5 scale to describe muscle strength. Slide through it to see what each step means. It is a simplified illustration of one movement.
No visible contraction
The muscle shows no sign of tightening when you try to use it.
A flicker of activity
A small flicker or tightening can be seen or felt, but it does not move the limb.
Moves without gravity
The limb can move when gravity is taken out of the picture, for example when it rests on a smooth surface, but it cannot lift.
Lifts against gravity
The limb can lift and hold its own weight through the movement, but nothing more than that.
Holds against some push
The muscle holds against a moderate push from the tester. This band is broad, and testers often add a plus or a minus.
Holds against full push
The muscle holds firmly against the tester's full, steady push. This is the usual result for a healthy muscle.
Why we explain it. In a wellness session we mostly notice differences between your sides. Low grades, or any new weakness, belong with a doctor.
Book a strength checkTalk. Position.
Push. Compare.
Each check takes only a few seconds, so the session stays calm and easy. Here is how it unfolds.
Talk
A short chat about how you feel, what you do all day, and any injuries, surgery or pain with movement. Tell us what we should work around.
Position
We help you into a comfortable position for each check, so the muscle we are looking at is doing the work and nothing else is straining.
Push and hold
You hold the position while we build a gentle push over a few seconds. You tell us the moment anything hurts, and we stop.
Compare
We compare sides, share what we noticed in plain language, and, in longer sessions, use it to guide your massage.
More than
strong or weak.
How a muscle holds tells us more than a single number. These are some of the things we pay attention to.
Left and right differences
One side holds more easily than the other. That is common and not always a problem, but it is worth knowing about.
Slow to start
A muscle that takes a moment to engage can point to areas that are tight or not used much.
A shaky hold
A hold that trembles or gives way in steps may be telling us the area tires or is guarded.
Tiring quickly
A muscle that holds at first but fades fast is useful to notice, especially after long days or training.
Others taking over
Sometimes a nearby muscle jumps in to help. Seeing it tells us where to ease off and where to focus.
Steady and even
Both sides hold steadily with a smooth push. That is a good thing to hear, too.
What we notice is an observation about how you hold today. It is not a diagnosis, and it can change from day to day.
Choose what
matters to you.
We do not test everything. We pick the areas that fit your day, your training and what you tell us.
Shoulders
Lifting the arm out to the side or forward.
Arms and grip
Bending and straightening the elbow, squeezing the hand.
Core and back
Holding the trunk steady while we apply a light push.
Hips and glutes
Pressing the leg out, back or to the side.
Thighs
Straightening the knee, bending it back.
Calves and ankles
Pointing the foot and lifting it up.
For the curious
and the active.
Active bodies
You train or play sport and would like to know if one side is doing more than the other.
Long desk days
You sit a lot and suspect some muscles have gone quiet while others work overtime.
Curious about strength
You like clear, concrete information about how your body responds.
One-sided habits
You always carry on one side, favour one leg or sleep on the same shoulder.
Between sessions
You get bodywork regularly and want it better matched to how you actually move.
Easing back in
You want to start moving again and would like a gentle look at where things stand.
Know the difference.

Add a little more care.
Round out your session with a recovery add-on. Ask us when you book.
Red Light Therapy
Light-based sessions to support relaxation and recovery.
BEMER PEMF
Pulsed electromagnetic field sessions to support circulation.
Bio-Meridian Activation
FOHOW meridian-based activation to support balance.
After your session.
A few simple habits help you carry it into your week.
Drink water
Drink water as usual through the rest of the day, especially if you also had a massage.
Move gently
A walk or easy stretching later in the day is usually welcome. Skip anything very intense until tomorrow.
Expect a little tiredness
The muscles you worked may feel pleasantly tired, like after light exercise. That is normal and passes.
Note what you notice
Write down any differences you feel between sides over the next few days. It helps us tune your next session.
Tell us how you feel
If anything feels sore in a way that worries you, get in touch with us, or with your doctor.
Good to tell us
before you book.
Please tell us if you have:
We may adapt the checks, or ask for your doctor to approve them first.
- A recent injury, strain, sprain or tear
- Recent surgery, or a joint replacement
- Pain with certain movements
- Very flexible joints, or joints that have dislocated before
- Heart or blood pressure concerns, since holding can raise pressure briefly
- Osteoporosis, or a medical reason to avoid strong muscle effort
- Pregnancy, so we can adapt the positions
- Feeling unwell or very tired today
See a doctor first if you have:
These can need medical attention before, or instead of, a muscle check.
- Weakness that is new, or getting worse over days or weeks
- Numbness or tingling that is new or spreading
- Weakness after a fall or injury
- Sharp pain when you push or hold
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
General information, not medical advice. Manual muscle testing here is a gentle strength check offered as a wellness service. We do not diagnose or treat medical conditions. Meridian-based activation draws on traditional concepts. Our services are not a substitute for medical care.
Good to know.
What is manual muscle testing?
It is a long-standing hands-on way of estimating how strongly a muscle can hold. You hold a position while we apply a gentle, steady push, and we notice how the muscle responds. We use it as a wellness check, often alongside massage.
How is it different from applied kinesiology?
Manual muscle testing looks at how strongly a muscle holds against a push, and compares your two sides. Applied kinesiology takes a wider look at posture and movement. Some practitioners claim muscle testing can diagnose illnesses or allergies. We do not, and research does not support that use.
What is the 0 to 5 scale?
It is a common scale that testers use to describe muscle strength, from no contraction at 0 to a firm hold against full push at 5. We explain it so you can follow along, but in a wellness session we mostly care about differences between your sides and how your muscles feel to test.
Will it hurt?
No. The push is gentle, builds slowly and should never be painful. Tell us if anything feels uncomfortable and we will stop right away.
Do I need to be strong?
Not at all. We compare you with yourself, not with anyone else. You hold only as firmly as feels comfortable.
Is there scientific evidence for it?
Manual muscle testing has a long history in physical therapy and is reasonable for spotting clear differences in strength. It depends on the tester and on your effort, and it is less precise for small differences. We treat it as a guide, not a measurement, and we never use it to diagnose.
Who should check with a doctor first?
If you have a recent injury or surgery, pain when you push, heart or blood pressure concerns, or any weakness or numbness that is new, please talk to your doctor and tell us before booking. Sudden weakness on one side, a drooping face or trouble speaking are emergencies. Call 911.
Is this medical treatment?
No. Our services are wellness services and are not a substitute for medical care. If you have an injury or a medical condition, please consult your doctor first.
